Emergency Communication Systems

Disabled Refuge Call, Accessible Toilet Alarms and Evacuation Alert Systems

DACT installs three distinct emergency communication systems, each governed by its own British Standard and serving a different purpose. The right system (or combination of systems) depends on your building type, occupancy, and compliance obligations.

Across our portfolio we cover all three:

  • Disabled Refuge Call (BS 5839-9). Two-way voice communication between stairwell refuge points and a central master station, enabling people with mobility impairments to communicate with assistance during an emergency evacuation.
  • Accessible Toilet Alarms. Pull-cord alarm systems in accessible toilets and changing facilities, with visible overhead indicators, reset units and integration to building management or reception systems.
  • Evacuation Alert Systems (BS 8629). Floor-by-floor alert systems for residential buildings over 18 metres, designed to support fire and rescue service operations under the Building Safety Act 2022.

If you’re not sure which system applies to your building, we’ll walk through your floor plans, current fire strategy and applicable regulations during the site survey, and recommend only what your building actually requires.

Compliance Framework by System Type

Each emergency communication system has its own compliance framework. Building inspectors, fire risk assessors and insurers check that the correct standard has been applied to the correct system, so getting this right at the design stage matters.

Disabled Refuge Call — BS 5839-9, BS 8300-2 and the Equality Act 2010.

Accessible Toilet Alarms — Building Regulations Approved Document M, BS 8300-2 and the Equality Act 2010.

Evacuation Alert Systems — BS 8629, the Building Safety Act 2022 and Building Regulations Approved Document B.

We apply the correct framework on each site and provide the relevant certification at handover. For mixed-use buildings, we coordinate the documentation into a single pack for your Responsible Person.
