Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems

Advanced Early Warning Fire Detection

DACT designs, installs and maintains aspirating smoke detection (ASD) systems for commercial and industrial premises across the UK. Rather than waiting for smoke to reach a detector, an ASD system actively draws air through a network of sampling pipes and analyses it continuously, identifying combustion particles long before they are visible.

Aspirating systems are governed by EN 54-20, the European product standard for aspirating smoke detectors, and installed as part of a wider fire detection system designed to BS 5839-1. They are specified where conventional point detection is impractical or too slow — high ceilings, harsh environments, or premises where the cost of a fire, or of a false alarm, is unacceptably high. For standard commercial detection, see our commercial fire alarm service.

EN 54-20 Detection Classes

EN 54-20 classifies aspirating detectors into three sensitivity classes. The right class depends on what you’re protecting and how early you need the warning.

  • Class A — very high sensitivity. The earliest possible warning, for environments where even minimal smoke signals a serious risk. Typically data centres, server rooms, control rooms and telecoms facilities.
  • Class B — enhanced sensitivity. Earlier detection than conventional point detectors, suited to clean rooms, plant rooms and areas holding high-value equipment or stock.
  • Class C — normal sensitivity. Comparable to conventional detection, used where aspirating pipework is chosen for access or environmental reasons rather than sensitivity, such as high-bay warehouses, cold storage and listed buildings.

Class is determined by the detector’s sensitivity at each sampling hole, so pipe layout and hole sizing are part of the design, not an afterthought. We calculate and commission the pipe network to achieve the class your specification requires, and provide the commissioning documentation for your fire risk assessor and insurer.

Key Benefits

  • Ultra-early warning. Detects combustion particles before smoke is visible, giving time to act before damage occurs.
  • Fewer false alarms. Intelligent filtering suits dusty, humid or high-airflow environments.
  • Works where point detection doesn’t. High ceilings, cold stores and heritage buildings.
  • Accessible maintenance. Detection units sit at ground level, so servicing needs no access equipment.

Ideal Applications

  • Data centres and server rooms. Protecting IT infrastructure where downtime is the real cost.
  • Clean rooms. Monitoring without contamination risk.
  • High-bay warehouses. Early detection at height, where smoke stratification delays standard detectors.
  • Cold storage. Reliable operation in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Heritage buildings. Discreet protection where visible devices aren’t acceptable.
  • Industrial facilities. Monitoring in harsh conditions.

Our Installation Process

Aspirating systems live or die on the pipe network design, so we treat that as the core of the job:

  • Site survey and design. Risk assessment, pipework layout modelling, sampling hole sizing and integration requirements, specified to the EN 54-20 class your building needs.
  • Installation. EN 54-20 compliant pipe network installation, detection unit mounting at accessible level, and system programming, with minimal disruption to operations.
  • Commissioning and handover. Full system testing, sensitivity adjustment and transport-time verification, integration checks with the fire alarm panel, staff training and documentation handover.

Industries We Serve

We install aspirating detection across sectors where early warning matters most:

  • Technology and data centres
  • Manufacturing and industrial
  • Healthcare
  • Heritage buildings and museums
  • Education
  • Retail and distribution
  • Financial services

Aspirating detection usually forms part of a wider fire strategy alongside conventional detection and alarm systems. We design and maintain both, under SLA-backed maintenance contracts matched to your site — see our SLA tier structure, or view the full range on our commercial services hub.
