Commercial intruder alarm Grade 2 and Grade 3 systems to BS EN 50131 installed by DACT

Commercial Intruder Alarm Systems

DACT is an SSAIB-accredited commercial intruder alarm contractor, designing, installing and maintaining detection systems for businesses across the UK. We work with facilities managers, main contractors and building owners to protect commercial premises against intrusion, theft and criminal damage.

Our systems are installed to BS EN 50131, the European standard for intrusion detection, at the security grade your insurer and risk profile require, typically Grade 2 or Grade 3 for commercial premises. We offer audible-only, monitored and police-response configurations, with integration to CCTV and access control where a connected security system is needed.

Intruder Alarm Security Grades

BS EN 50131 classifies intruder alarm systems into four security grades based on risk level. The right grade for your premises is usually set by your insurer and the value of what you’re protecting.

Grade Typical Use
Grade 1 Low risk. Rarely specified for commercial sites.
Grade 2 Low to medium risk. The most common grade for shops, offices and standard commercial premises.
Grade 3 Medium to high risk. For premises holding higher-value stock or assets.
Grade 4 High risk. The highest level of protection, for very high-value goods.

Most commercial premises require Grade 2, with Grade 3 for higher-risk sites such as warehouses, pharmacies or electronics retailers. Your insurer will usually specify the minimum grade as a condition of cover. We design to the required grade and provide the certification your insurer needs.

Monitoring and Response Options

How your alarm responds when it’s triggered matters as much as the detection itself. We offer three levels of response, and your insurer may specify which one your cover requires.

  • Audible-only. The alarm sounds an internal and external siren to deter the intruder and alert anyone nearby. Suitable for lower-risk sites or where keyholders are close by.
  • ARC monitored. The system signals an Alarm Receiving Centre 24/7. On activation, the ARC follows an agreed escalation process, contacting your nominated keyholders so a response is always triggered, even out of hours.
  • Police response. ARC monitoring with a police Unique Reference Number (URN), so confirmed activations are passed to the police for response. We handle the URN registration with your local force and design the system to the dual-confirmation standard police response requires.

Most insurers require at least ARC monitoring for commercial cover, with police response specified for higher-risk or higher-value premises. We’ll advise on the level your insurer needs and manage the monitoring contract and URN registration on your behalf.

Installation Process

We follow a structured process to deliver a system that meets your insurer’s grade requirement and protects your premises reliably:

  • Risk assessment. Site survey, threat analysis and review of your insurance requirements, so we specify the right security grade and coverage from the start.
  • System design. We select components, plan detection zones and cable routing, and design in integration with CCTV or access control where needed.
  • Professional installation. Our engineers install with minimal disruption, concealing cabling, positioning detectors correctly and programming the system to specification.
  • Commissioning and handover. Full system testing, staff training, and handover of the certification your insurer and the police URN registration require.

Maintenance Services

An intruder alarm is only as good as its upkeep. Regular servicing keeps the system reliable, compliant with your insurer’s requirements, and recognised for police response where applicable:

  • Scheduled servicing. Preventive maintenance visits and battery checks that keep the system within BS EN 50131 and your insurer’s conditions.
  • 24/7 emergency response. Reactive callout for faults and activations, with response times set by your maintenance contract.
  • System updates and checks. Firmware updates, performance checks and compliance updates as standards or your site requirements change.

Maintenance is delivered under SLA-backed contracts matched to your site’s risk profile. See our SLA tier structure for typical response times.
