What Is an Integrated Reception System?

 

An Integrated Reception System combines terrestrial TV, satellite and radio onto a single cable infrastructure, delivering every service to every outlet in the building from one shared head-end. It replaces the alternative — individual dishes and aerials on each dwelling — with one designed system that a managing agent can maintain centrally.

IRS is normally specified at design stage on new-build residential blocks, or as a retrofit when a block’s ageing communal system starts generating tenant complaints. Performance is not subjective: BS EN 60728-1-2 sets the minimum signal quality that must be achieved at the system outlet in operation, and CAI Code of Practice 01 governs installation of terrestrial and satellite reception systems in MDU and commercial premises.

Key Features

“Communal aerial” covers several distinct system types. Specifying the wrong one is the most common reason a block ends up with a system that cannot carry the services residents expect.

    • MATV — Master Antenna Television. One shared aerial distributing terrestrial TV and radio only. No satellite capability.
    • SMATV — Satellite Master Antenna Television. Adds a shared dish, but typically distributes a fixed pre-selected package rather than giving each dwelling independent control.
    • IRS — Integrated Reception System. Terrestrial, satellite and radio combined on one cable, with each dwelling free to select and record independently via its own receiver.
    • Fibre IRS — optical distribution from the head-end, sharing containment and design principles with structured data cabling. Used where cable runs are long or the building is large enough that coaxial signal loss becomes the limiting factor.

Which is appropriate depends on building size, riser routes, dwelling count and what the specification requires each dwelling to be able to do.

Installation Process

A communal system either meets its performance figures at every outlet or it does not. Our process is built around proving that it does.

  • Site survey and signal assessment — measuring available terrestrial and satellite signal at the proposed head-end position before any design work begins.
  • System design — head-end specification, cable schedule and loss calculations sized so that every outlet meets the performance requirements of BS EN 60728-1-2, including the furthest point on the network.
  • Installation — head-end assembly, riser cabling and outlet termination, with earthing and equipotential bonding to the requirements of BS EN 60728-11.
  • Commissioning and handover — signal levels measured and recorded at outlets across the system, with the results issued as documentation rather than a verbal sign-off.

Once handed over, communal systems can be covered under the same maintenance and response tiers as the rest of your building’s systems.

Integration Options

We install and maintain IRS in the building types where a shared system is the only practical answer:

  • New-build apartment blocks and MDUs — specified at design stage alongside door entry and access control and the building’s life safety systems.
  • Student accommodation and HMOs — high outlet density, high turnover, low tolerance for call-outs, and usually installed with communal CCTV on the same programme.
  • Hotels — often integrated with in-room entertainment.
  • Care and residential homes — commonly delivered alongside nurse call systems.

Because IRS shares risers, containment and head-end space with other low-voltage services, single-visit coordination avoids a second contractor re-opening the same routes weeks later.
